It holds the promise of more efficient memory use, and a solution to unfolding and flattening issues common in UV mapping. Ptex addresses many issues by eliminating the need for UV assignment, providing seamless filtering, and allowing any number of textures to be stored in a single file. We set out to find out how this simple yet powerful texture co-ordinate system has flown under the radar and established itself so firmly in pipelines around the world.ĭisney’s Ptex texture distribution and management system. While it is still very much alive, it is UDIM texture encoding that appears popular amongst studios large and small. Many including this author assumed it would sweep the texturing community. and then at the start of 2010 Ptex released as free open source. By September of 2009 Ptex was integrated into Pixar’s RenderMan Pro Server 15.0. It was in June 2008 that Ptex was first presented at the Eurographics Symposium on Rendering by Disney Animation, and later that year that Disney’s Bolt was released the first feature film to use Ptex. The Disney Ptex library became available to the public community of texture artists, lighters and modelers about four years ago. While Ptex may still yet win the texturing heart of pipelines around the world, it has not yet become the dominant force. From UV to UDIM to Ptex, it is easy to think one technology has just displaced another, but the reality is more complex. UDIM UV mapping has enormous popularity for texturing in the face of much newer systems such as Ptex (which works very well in its own right). ![]()

However, in this film, the mathematician is a woman, Catherine, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. ![]() Many movies about mathematicians feature male characters. It is another savant character who crumbles under the weight of their genius, succumbing to psychosis. But as in the two previously mentioned films, this is also a mathematician depicted as a troubled outsider and poorly adjusted to society. In this wonderfully acted movie, Russell Crowe plays John Nash, a real mathematician and Nobel Prize winner. Arguably a violently negative representation of a savant mathematician, Pi is a compelling movie with disturbing undertones. The character Max Cohen, played by Sean Gullette, descends into debilitating psychosis through the movie and ultimately lobotomizes himself. In this movie, the depiction of the mathematician is closer to the dangerous deviant than the quicky genius. Notably, Will Hunting is a working-class character who essentially sneaks into the world of academia through his job as a janitor. One of the foil characters, his friend Chuckie played by Ben Affleck, is math illiterate, which is shown as “normal” in this movie. The character is undoubtedly something of a troubled outsider who runs afoul of the law. The stereotypical savant character ranges from quirky genius to troubled outsider to dangerous deviant.
